dc.description.abstract Birecik is a town which had been a very important place for civilizations throughout historical ages. Since its being on the silk road, its location along the euphrates and it is a place where east and west meet, Birecik had been a very important place. One of the largest shipyard of the Otoman Empire was in Birecik as a result of above mentioned importances. Birecik had been affected from a very big economical cirisis , which also affected the whole country, occured in the term of between the last years of Otoman Empire and the first years the new Republic. So that, many of the trading establishments and the shipyard had been closed. On the other hand, Birecik couldnt get a benefit from the economical development occured in the 1950?s. The people in Birecik had turned into a domestic trade and a closed social system. But especially with the GAP Project , Birecik progressed an important rate of development both in ecenomical and social life , likewise in the whole region where Birecik exists. This study has been made to examine these changes and to get information about the changes in the whole region. en_US
