Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to determine the natural and cultivated plants used for traditional benefits by the local people who live in Şanlıurfa central district and attached villages and demonstrate the importance of these plants for the ethnobotanical aspects. By the identification of collected plant specimens within the field research 87 genera and 111 taxa belonging to 39 families (67 species, 27 subspecies, 17 varietes) were identified and 9 of these plants are cultivated plants. In addition, 2 of the identified taxa are endemic. 1 of these 111 taxa belongs to Fungi kingdom, Ascomycota divisio; the other taxa belong to Plantae kingdom, Spermatophyta divisio, Gymnospermae and Angiospermae subdivisio. By the number of taxa they contain, the top five families in the area; Asteraceae (24), Fabaceae (23), Lamiaceae (19), Apiaceae (12) and Poaceae (10). According to the chrology of these taxa, 30 taxa belong to Irano-Turanian, 6 taxa belong to Mediterranean, 4 taxa belong to East Mediterranean, 1 taxon belongs to West Mediterranean and 3 taxa belong to European-Siberian elements. Chrology of 67 taxa are not known. When the life forms of taxa are evaluated; 5 taxa are phanerophytes, 5 taxa are chamaephyte, 43 taxa are hemicryptophytes, 50 taxa are therophytes and 7 taxa are geophytes. The taxa determined from the research field are used for different purposes, for examplpe; 27 of them are used for food, 6 of them are used for beverage, 3 of them are used for spice/flavoring, 39 of them are used for medicine for people, 6 of them are used for medicine for animals, 2 of them are used for fuel, 25 of them are used for fodder, 9 of them are used for handicraft (natural painting, broom, woodwork), 1 of them is used for roofage, 4 of them are used for amulet / incense, 7 of them are harmful, 1 of them is used for social usage (ornament) and 2 of them are loved for their fragrance. In addition, 8 of these taxa are not used for any purpose, but their local names are determined.
